If you’re new to the Web,  you probably don’t know what is needed in order to have a Web presence.  That’s understandable!  There is a whole new language when it comes to this technology thing and many times familiar words are used to mean things that aren’t what they seem.  You’ll see words like domain name, hosting, open source applications and you’ll wonder, “what does all that mean?”  I’ll try make things as understandable as possible throughout all of my writings in order to make this a pleasant and informative experience.  This is especially true when I make product and/or services recommendations.

First let’s consider Domain name.  A Domain name is your unique address in the entire Internet community.  You arrived to this Blog through my unique address womenenjoyingsuccess.com/getontheweb/.  The “womenenjoyingsuccess.com” portion of the address is the Domain name and the “/getontheweb/” portion uniquely identifies my Blog on this website.  You’ll need a Domain name that is unique to you and you’ll need to purchase it at one of the many companies providing Domain name registration services.

The next thing you’ll need is a hosting package.  Hosting is simply the physical hardware and software associated with hosting  where your Website/Blog will reside.  Again, there are numerous companies providing these services.

Then there is the Website/Blog itself which needs to be created and your content entered in order to announce to the world that you now have a Web presence.  You’ll notice that I use the terminology Website/Blog so I hope you’ve read my “Getting Started”  page to know exactly what I’m talking about.  I feel that WordPress is just a wonderful software platform to develop your Web presence because of its ease of use and the fact it’s free is just a bonus that can’t be ignored.

You can get all of the things I mentioned above; Domain name, Hosting, and WordPress from any number of sources.  I try to keep up with the best deals that are out there in order to keep your costs within a reasonable budget.  But before you get started you’ll have to come up with a good Domain name that truly captures the essence of your business.  You may have come up with more than one name because it’s quite possible your first choice is already taken by someone as enterprising as you.  So if your first choice happens to be taken you’ll be ready with some good alternatives.
